Measuring task and principle
In hot-dip galvanising lines, the composition of the zinc bath, in particular its aluminium and iron content, determines coating adhesion and quality as well as the formation of dross. Common practice is to take samples for laboratory analysis, with a corresponding delay.
Galvalibs measures directly in the bath: a laser creates a plasma on the melt whose light spectrum reveals the elemental composition. This laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) delivers values in real time, without sampling.
Applications
Hot-dip galvanising lines
Continuous monitoring of the zinc bath on continuous galvanising lines.
Aluminium control
Targeted addition of alloy ingots based on current readings.
Dross prevention
Early detection of unfavourable bath conditions before dross forms.
Product changes
Fast check of bath chemistry when switching between coatings.
Benefits
Real time instead of lab
Readings during operation rather than hours later.
Consistent coating quality
Tighter control of bath chemistry for uniform coating weight.
Less dross and zinc consumption
Better bath management reduces dross and material usage.
Less manual sampling
Greater safety for staff at the hot bath.
