Measuring task and principle
In a steel plant, temperature determines formability, microstructure and ultimately material properties. It has to be measured fast, reliably and without contact at many points, often on moving, scaled material and through steam and dust.
Infrared pyrometers capture the thermal radiation emitted by the surface and calculate its temperature. Depending on the task, single- or two-colour (ratio) pyrometers, fibre-optic versions or scanning systems are used.
Applications
Continuous casting
Strand surface temperature for monitoring secondary cooling.
Reheating furnaces
Discharge temperature of the stock leaving the furnace.
Rolling mill
Temperature before and between stands for thermomechanical rolling.
Cooling sections & coilers
Controlled cooling for defined microstructure and properties.
Induction heating
Fast measurement for controlling induction systems.
Benefits
Non-contact and fast
Measurement on moving material without probe delay.
The right design
Single- or two-colour, fibre-optic or compact, depending on the measuring point.
For harsh environments
Protective housings, cooling and air purging for mill conditions.
Direct integration
Standard interfaces to automation and quality systems.
AST develops and manufactures infrared pyrometers and temperature measurement solutions for industrial high-temperature processes, including the steel and metal industry.
